Metrolink users urged to have their say on ‘Dogs on Trams’ scheme

Pups in Manchester are urged to get their owners online and responding to a new survey, questioning whether or not our furry friends should be allowed on the city’s trams.

The online questionnaire is in response to a pilot scheme which has allowed dogs to travel on the Metrolink network since the beginning of August. Delivered in partnership with tram operator KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the scheme has seen pooches commuting all over the city, subject to rules regarding safety, cleanliness and consideration of other passengers.

The Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) survey, available here, closes on the 31st October, and has already been completed by 2,000 people. Feedback from the survey will determine whether or not pet pups will be allowed to travel on the network permanently. Currently only assistance dogs are allowed to travel on Metrolink, although non-assistance dogs are allowed on buses and trains across the city.

A final decision is expected in early 2023. In the meantime, dogs will be allowed to continue making their journeys on the network, as long as they are on a lead (and accompanied by well-behaved owners).

There is no charge for pooches to travel, although they aren’t allowed to sit on seats – and of course, owners must be responsible for any accidents that occur on the way. Trams can be very exciting places, after all!

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s head of Metrolink, said: “I want to thank everyone who has taken part in the survey so far, but I would urge everyone who has a view to have their say before it closes on 31st October.

“Every response will help local leaders make an informed decision on whether to make this permanent or not.”
