New South Wales travellers enjoying fare-free trips for 12 days

Travellers in New South Wales, Australia, are enjoying 12 days of free travel across Easter and up to 26 April.

The fare-free period covers all Opal network services in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra, and includes Metro, train, bus, light rail and ferry services.

All customers need is to do is tap their Opal card and they will be able to go where they like at no charge.

Transport for New South Wales says it is to “boost business and get the community moving.”

Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer, Howard Collins, said: “With floods, industrial action, and COVID-19, it has been a challenging time for many, and this initiative will deliver some hip pocket relief, encourage people to enjoy what Greater Sydney has to offer, and also provide a boost to businesses.

“Head out to the Easter Show, catch a game of footy or dinner with family and friends, and help revitalise our city centres and support local communities.”

However, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union has put up signs in stations saying that the free travel is a result of their action over a rail network shutdown in February.
