NYMR launches Volunteer Voices exhibition to celebrate 50 years of its incredible volunteers

As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has launched a Volunteer Voices exhibition in the Learning Coach at Goathland Station. The free exhibition is available to visit until November 2023 and allows visitors to unearth the stories behind this iconic heritage railway, spanning five decades of camaraderie, dedication, and shared passion for preserving a bygone era.

The NYMR owes its existence to the unwavering determination of a small group of enthusiasts who envisioned reviving the railway. When walking through the exhibition, visitors will be transported back to the early days of the heritage railway’s inception and witness the spirit that kindled its restoration.

The Volunteer Voices exhibition serves as a tribute to the dedication of its volunteers. What better way to understand the contribution made by NYMR volunteers than through the words of the volunteers themselves? They shed light on the experiences they have had while dedicating their time and skills to the railway’s preservation.

Michelle Baggaley, Community Engagement Manager, said: “At the heart of the NYMR lies a community bonded by their shared love for our living museum. The exhibition showcases the teamwork and collaboration that goes into maintaining and operating the heritage railway, creating an unforgettable experience for our visitors. With over 900 active volunteers at the NYMR, they really are the lifeblood who work together to preserve and operate it, ensuring its legacy for future generations. The wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise that they bring to the NYMR never ceases to amaze me.”

The Volunteer Voices exhibition offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the extraordinary individuals who have shaped its legacy.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the NYMR Unlimited Annual Pass for £45 which allows visitors to benefit from free travel for 12 months from the date of their first visit, at no extra cost. This year, kids (aged 0-15) go free, and Carers travel for free when accompanying a full fare paying passenger.
