The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has authorised a range of improvements to Salford Crescent station.
The regulator has green lit the station’s new 157m long platform (Platform 3), with canopy and seating, an extension of the existing footbridge, and a new lift. As part of the £21 million upgrade project, a new gateline will also open adjacent to the existing station building.
ORR added that it had worked closely with Network Rail and the wider project team throughout the authorisation process, ensuring that all necessary checks and surveys were carried out.
Steve Fletcher, Deputy Director, Engineering and Asset Management, said: “This is an important step in getting the busy Salford Crescent station ready to open its new platform to help improve how passengers move through the station.
“We’re pleased to have played our part in getting the improvements ready to be put into use. Our team worked closely with Network Rail to support them through the authorisation process, just as we do for new trains and infrastructure across the country.”
Work began on Salford Crescent station in March 2025. Once in use, its new platform is expected to improve passenger flow and reduce train delays, allowing more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country.
