Outline of £250 million HS2 phase 2 ground investigation work

Details have been revealed of the HS2 route wide ground investigation’s programme for phase two – a contract estimated to be worth up £250 million and delivered in up to 8 years.

HS2 Ltd is hosting a pre-procurement market engagement exercise on Thursday, 9th July to inform potential suppliers of the approach, raise awareness of the opportunities and to provide update on the current status of the HS2 programme.

The main objective of Phase 2 Route Wide GI programme is to support the design and build programme for HS2 and its ancillary and related infrastructure that covers routes including:

  • Crewe to Manchester;
  • Birmingham (Rugeley) to Crewe;
  • Lichfield to Sheffield; and
  • Sheffield to Leeds.

The programme may also involve the execution of GI in other associated routes in the Midlands and Northwest England.

Among the purposes of the work includes providing information for geotechnical and geo-environmental risk assessments necessary for the planning and design submissions including supporting the establishment of the geotechnical design basis for subsequent design and construction.

A HS2 spokesperson said: “The ground investigations programme for Phase Two of HS2 represents one of the largest overall packages of GI works in the UK.

“The video conference we are hosting next month will enable us to engage with potential contractors ahead of the formal bidding process starting next year.”
