Public consultation announced for Yorkgate Train Station transformation

Translink has announced plans to carry-out remote and digital consultation for the redevelopment of Yorkgate Train Station.

This exciting project will be a further milestone in the transformation of public transport, delivering a high-quality sustainable transport hub to replace the current station.  It will also help regenerate this part of the city while providing enhanced connections to the new Ulster University Campus. This consultation phase now invites the public to share their views on the proposals.

Launching the public consultation, the Minister for Infrastructure Nichola Mallon said: “I am delighted to announce the launch of the public consultation as an early step in the redevelopment of Yorkgate Train Station. This project represents a further milestone in improving our public transport offering and making public transport a more attractive offering.

“Whilst the redevelopment of the station will help our construction industry kick start after the COVID-19 outbreak, it represents a real signal to the people of North Belfast that we will invest in improving their connections.

“To ensure that this project has the maximum impact, I want to take this opportunity to encourage the local community to respond to this consultation to help shape our new station and help maximise the impact we seek to make.”

The new Yorkgate transport hub enhancements include:

·         A new train station building with high quality customer and staff facilities

·         New public facilities including retail space, toilets, waiting areas and a Changing Places facility

·         Cycle parking and connections to existing cycle infrastructure

·         Potential to connect to new cycle infrastructure

·         A new footbridge between platforms

·         Increased platform width

·         New canopies to platforms

·         High quality landscaping and public realm

Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said: “We are pleased to be taking these important redevelopment plans forward. Passengers will enjoy an enhanced travel experience with modern new facilities and improvements to accessibility with better links to walking and cycling.  These will be key to creating a sustainable transport network as part of a ‘green’ economic recovery as we emerge from this crisis.  It will also help revitalise the local economy by supporting both the manufacturing and construction industry as we rebuild and recover.

“As a regeneration project, we look forward to helping transform this part of the city by contributing to other ongoing regeneration initiatives including the good work underway in Sailortown and the emerging City Quays and Ulster University developments.

“We would encourage everyone to have their say and in light of the current Covid-19 social distancing restrictions, we have developed a range of digital-led platforms to make it safe and easy for everyone to give feedback on the proposals for this major redevelopment.”
