The Rail Alliance today launches Destination Digitalisation, an exciting new event for 2020 focusing on the opportunities and challenges for introducing digital technologies to the railway. Following the success of Destination Decarbonisation in September 2019, Destination Digitalisation will be the the second event in this series to take place and will bring the rail industry together with government, public and client bodies, and wider stakeholders, to address the key digital challenges and trends specific to the entire railway eco-system.
Taking place on the 26 February 2020 at the Edgbaston Park Hotel at the University of Birmingham, the Rail Alliance in partnership with the Birmingham Centre of Rail Research (BCRRE) invites organisations in the digital space to engage with world-leading industry experts and researchers to share knowledge and ideas that can drive rail digitalisation strategies forward. This one day event will incorporate a conference, technical workshops, meet the buyer sessions in addition to an exhibition to showcase technologies and innovations along with practical examples presented in the form of industry case studies.
Alex Burrows, Managing Director of the Rail Alliance and BCRRE says: “Digitalisation is widely recognised as a significant opportunity offering a vast amount of potential benefits to the railway. These include improved capacity, traffic management, reliability, energy efficiency, and more services as well as reduced operating costs that will see both operators and passengers experiencing more frequent trains, increased levels of automation, and improved safety and sustainability.
We aim to provide the rail sector with a platform for practical discussion and demonstrations that address those benefits and also the challenges, for example financial investment and cyber threats, as well as how to achieve a shift in mindset and to develop the appropriate business and operating models. Destination Digitalisation will provide the opportunity for this to take place. Only by addressing these challenges will digitalisation be able to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the railway sector.”
Digitalisation themes to be explored on the day will include big data, predictive maintenance, digital twins, cybersecurity, 5G, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, intelligent railway infrastructure, autonomous trains, robotics, on-board value added services, signalling and train control and many others.
BCRRE is recognised as a world centre of excellence for digitalisation and decarbonisation technologies and hosts the UK Rail Research Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence in
Digital Systems to better integrate existing academic and industry capabilities to help innovate and support transformational change in rail technology across the globe.
