Rail braces for strikes, and RMT calls for another strike day on the Tube

Transport for London is among the latest operators to warn the public of the strikes on Wednesday.

It has said people should check before they travel, as the Overground, Elizabeth line and some of the Underground will be affected.

Andy Lord, TfL’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Planned strike action on the national rail network on Wednesday will mean disruption for some of our customers, with the London Overground, Elizabeth line, and London Underground services being affected. I advise all customers to check before they travel.”

As reported, many operators have sent out a message that people should only use trains when strictly necessary as RMT moves ahead with strike action over jobs, conditions and pay.

In an address to members, Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, said he was “heartened by the display of magnificent solidarity” from members during the last strikes in June. He said they had support from the public — including the travelling public on the trains.

He reiterated that the offer from Network Rail fell short of their expectations when considering inflation was in “double digits”. He said there had been no offers made from the train operators.

Yesterday, Network rail said that “thousands of specially-trained and fully qualified back-up staff will again step in during the walkout to keep vital services running for those who need them.” But it says only 20% of services will run on about half the network.

As such, people should only travel if they must and if doing so plan ahead.

Thursday morning will also be disrupted as services see a return to duty.

Tube strike

Tube workers will take strike action in an ongoing dispute over pensions and jobs on August 19.

The latest call for action has been prompted by what RMT says is TfL’s refusal to share the details of a draft government proposal they received regarding funding of the transport system in the capital.
