Rail raises money for hospice in memory of colleague

Railway teams, family and friends joined together to raise funds for a Northamptonshire hospice that cared for a sadly missed colleague.

On Thursday 28 April, staff from CrossCountry, Network Rail, East Midlands Railway and West Midlands Trains went on a sponsored walk along the 14-mile Brampton Valley Way from Market Harborough to Northampton.

Starting at the hospice in Corby, the fundraisers held collections at Corby and Market Harborough stations. Then they headed along the route of the former railway line that has since become a dedicated walking and cycle path between Market Harborough and Northampton.

Their efforts raised £4,000 which will be donated to Lakelands Day Care Hospice.

Lakelands does not get any NHS or government funding, but instead it relies on donations and volunteers to provide free end-of-life care for local residents.

It was Lakelands looked after former railwayman Adam Winkworth, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2015. Friends and members of Adam’s family took part in the walk, sharing memories and supporting the fundraising effort.

Speaking after the event, CrossCountry’s managing director, Tom Joyner, said: “I am so pleased that colleagues from across the railway family could come together and help support this great cause. Having seen first-hand how the brilliant hospice team at Lakelands looked after my friend Adam and his family, I know how important it is that we support hospices across the UK in the communities where we and our families live.”
