RailTel carrying out major signalling work in India

State-owned RailTel is delivering modern signalling worth Rs2.24bn on India’s Northern Railway zone.

The project sees engineers replace obsolete mechanical signalling systems with a state-of-the-art electronic interlocking upgrade. The initiative covers 26 stations. Three of them are in the Delhi division, nine in the Ambala division and 14 in the Firozpur division.

The aim is to enhance the safety and efficiency of train operations, RailTel says.

RailTel added that work has already been commissioned at six stations – three stations in the Delhi division and three stations in the Ambala division. Other work is in the advanced stage of completion at six stations in the Ambala division. The first stage of implementation on 14 stations of the Firozpur division has also begun with the initiation of planning, design and procurement processes for the equipment.

The new system will enable trains to run at 110kmph. Currently they run at 50kmph.

Puneet Chawla, chairman and managing director, RailTel said: “This system replacement exercise is a continuous process on Indian Railways and RailTel is playing an important role in this system replacement exercise.

“RailTel also intends to play a significant role in modernizing Train Control System of Indian Railways through execution of KAVACH (Train Collision Avoidance System) which is an indigenously developed automatic train protection system.

“This is proposed to be implemented over Long Term Evolution (LTE) based high speed mobile communication corridor for Indian Railways.”
