ScotRail: Travelling by train has never been easier

As part of the train operator’s plans towards greener and more sustainable travel, customers are now able to buy and download Single (including Advance) and Return tickets straight to their smartphones using a brand new ScotRail app.

The flexibility of the new system means people can buy their tickets from the comfort of their home, or on the way to the station and it will instantly become available on their mobile device.

The tickets, which use a barcode (similar to a QR code), are activated when the customer is ready to travel and will be scanned at the ticket gates prior to boarding, so there’s no need to print them.

The new system is helping future proof travel on Scotland’s Railway. Customers will receive their tickets instantly, so they will be able to avoid queues and head straight for their trains, saving them time and helping provide a physically distanced and contactless journey.

The mTickets, which can be purchased and stored in the ScotRail app have, until now, mostly been limited to cross border travel, but are being extended to include journeys wholly within Scotland.

Each barcode ticket will include all the information required to check a ticket’s validity, such as journey, ticket type and route, and gates will ‘clip’ the ticket to ensure it can’t be reused. Rail staff can also inspect them visually in the same way as a paper ticket, or scan them using their mobile retail devices.

And, a live journey feature will keep passengers up to date with one tap of the app, showing platform and up-to-date service information.

Lesley Kane, ScotRail Commercial Director, said: “This is another big step forward towards bringing former customers back and attracting new ones, following the pandemic crisis where the rail network in Scotland lost 90 per cent of its customers.

“With our mTickets, customers will be able to plan, buy and travel using the new app on their smart phone.

“By removing the need to print off the tickets we are enhancing our green credentials and in the wake of coronavirus, we are also cutting down on the number of touchpoints, ticket machines and queues.

“Customers will also be able to access live journey information on the move via the app, which means travelling by train has never been easier.”
