Six figure salaries beckon as SLCO continues recruitment push

A recruitment drive by train operator SLC Operations (SLCO) has seen it boost its workforce by 50%, with the promise of more jobs to come.

As part of a £750,000 investment at the end of last year, the Birmingham-based business unveiled plans to take on a number of new roles, including depot and main line drivers, with salaries for fully qualified drivers starting at £62,000 and overtime pushing that towards six figures.

Following a flurry of applications, the company is in the process of appointing 11 new drivers (including five depot drivers and three driver instructors), but still has roles to fill.

Explained SLCO Managing Director Cath Bellamy: “Since launching our recruitment drive, we’ve had a really good response, but to help keep us on track with our growth, we have even more opportunities, including a number of vacancies for main line train drivers working in and around the West Midlands. If you have the experience, a good safety record and want variety of traction and routes, we’d love to hear from you.”

Formed in February 2020 by Cath and fellow former Chiltern Railway’s stalwarts Adrian Shooter and Ian Walters, in just two years SLCO has made a real impact, gaining its non-passenger/passenger operating licences and building up an impressive client list including MTREL, Transport for Wales, Transport for London, South Western Railway, Network Rail, Colas Rail, VivaRail and Balfour Beatty Rail.

The business, which operates out of dedicated offices at Kings Norton, Birmingham, provides a range of services including train driver and guard hire, operational training, instructor hire, rail vehicle introduction/acceptance and rolling stock collection and delivery. It is also one of the UK’s leading specialist train driver training providers, offering driver/train crew and instructor training and route familiarisation, as well as Sentinel/PTS sponsorship and training.

Now the company has ambitions to extend its range even further, supported by its growing workforce.

“We’re not only offering people the chance of a rewarding career within the rail industry, but also the opportunity to be part of a rapidly expanding and exciting business,” said Cath.
