SLC Rail appointed to develop strategic plans for proposed Welborne station

Fareham Borough Council has appointed SLC Rail to deliver a Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) for the proposed railway station at Welborne Garden Village.

The work will be funded by the Government’s Garden Communities Fund, following the awarding of a £65,000 grant to Fareham Borough Council to help progress plans for Welborne station.

Councillor Simon Martin, executive member for planning and development, Fareham Borough Council, said: “We are delighted SLC Rail is helping us take this project to the next stage. Delivering a new railway station at Welborne will be a complex and lengthy process and SLC Rail has the expertise and knowledge to help us move this ambitious goal one step closer.”

SLC Rail has a solid track record of delivering new railway infrastructure and the SOBC is the first step towards engaging wider investment partners in the proposal. It will review potential costs, passenger demand, and the practicalities of introducing new services, as well as examining the wider social, economic and environmental benefits of the proposed scheme.

Mark Beckett, rail strategy manager at SLC Rail, said: “Fareham Borough Council has always recognised the potential and the sustainability benefits that this proposed railway station will bring to the local area and to the new development at Welborne Garden Village.  We’re looking forward to playing our part in making it a reality.”
