Snowdon Mountain Railway will be welcoming visitors back as trains commence service on Saturday 22nd May following the easing of restrictions in Wales.
The historic railway line first opened in 1896 and now carries on average 140,000 passengers in a normal year on the 4.7 mile journey from Llanberis to Snowdon’s summit.
The Traditional Diesel Service will run daily until the end of October with this year’s journey taking passengers ¾ distance up Snowdon to Clogwyn Station. The two hour round trip to Clogwyn offers spectacular views on the journey to the open mountainside station.
Vince Hughes, Commercial Manager at Snowdon Mountain Railway said: “Last year was a challenging year for the tourism sector but with a UK Staycation boom forecast we’re looking forward to a successful 2021 season. We’re also extremely proud that the railway is entering its 125th year of taking passengers up Snowdon.”
The railway has made the extremely difficult decision that Hafod Eryri, the Summit Visitor Centre, will remain closed this year. Unfortunately, with a level of restrictions still remaining in place for the foreseeable future the railway cannot operate the building within these parameters for the 2021 season.
The building on the summit of Snowdon sees hundreds of thousands of walkers and train passengers each year and with the gradual easing of the Government restrictions and the vaccination programme across the UK, the railway is hopeful that they will be able to open and operate during the 2022 season.
