South Devon Railway takes the lead in preserving historic Locomotive 3205

South Devon Railway Ltd, a Charitable Community Benefit Society, has announced a ground-breaking collaboration with the 2251 Locomotive Fund to become the custodians of the renowned locomotive 3205 for the next 50 years. This strategic agreement solidifies South Devon Railway’s commitment to historical preservation and positions them as the primary steward of this unique piece of locomotive heritage.

The 2251 Locomotive Fund, owners of 3205 since withdrawal from British Railways in 1965, has chosen South Devon Railway as the ideal custodial home for the locomotive. Recognising South Devon Railway’s track record and passion for preserving the golden age of steam locomotion, the 2251 Locomotive Fund is confident that 3205 will thrive under their care.

This agreement ensures that 3205, which was built at Swindon Works in 1946, will find a permanent residence at the South Devon Railway, where it will not only be preserved but also celebrated, serving as a living testament to the rich history of rail travel on the Great Western Railway.

Jon Morton, Chairman of South Devon Railway Ltd, said: “We are thrilled to take on the custodianship of locomotive 3205. This collaboration with the 2251 Locomotive Fund underscores our commitment to preserving the heritage of steam locomotion. As the primary stewards of 3205, we are excited to showcase its historical significance to railway enthusiasts and the wider public.”

Exciting New Share Issue to Fund Restoration

To help fund the comprehensive restoration of locomotive 3205, South Devon Railway has announced new share issue. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for supporters and enthusiasts to become stakeholders in the preservation of this historic locomotive and the wider railway. Some of the funds raised will provide vital new infrastructure which will enable greater care and restoration of our locos and rolling stock and improved visitor facilities, as well as contributing towards the significant restoration costs of 3205.

Supporters who participate in the share issue will not only contribute to the preservation of a vital piece of railway history but will also become an integral part of South Devon Railway’s journey in safeguarding the story of steam locomotion. The share issue offers an opportunity for enthusiasts to actively contribute to the restoration process of the locomotive and be a part of the railway’s story.

The Trustees of the 2251 Locomotive Fund expressed support for the share issue, stating, “This innovative funding approach demonstrates South Devon Railway’s commitment to engaging the community in the preservation effort. We encourage enthusiasts and supporters to participate in this unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the future of locomotive 3205.”

South Devon Railway looks forward to the enthusiastic response from supporters and the wider community, as together, they embark on this exciting journey to restore and preserve locomotive 3205.
