SSE Enterprise Rail reveals new rail lead as it builds a platform for improving in the industry

SSE Enterprise Rail has revealed Tom Smith as its new rail director, as the specialists in mechanical and electrical maintenance and compliance look to accelerate ahead in the market.

He replaces managing director, Raj Sinha, who will continue with the company in an elevated non-executive director role, working solely on major contracts.

The company has built a solid platform as it nears its fifth anniversary since creating the SSE Enterprise Rail business, with the changes announced set to further strengthen its grip on the market.

Tom has over 14 years’ experience in the rail industry, where he has worked across North Western Railway, Transport for London and London Underground, and is no stranger to SSE Enterprise Rail having worked as operations’ director for the last three years.

He brings particular knowledge around line-side and station refurbishments, including large-scale infrastructure projects, and his skills include project and programme management.

Prior to joining SSE, Tom had built up an excellent reputation in project management and client relations, having spent 18 years with telecoms giant British Telecoms (BT) and an MD at an SME specialising in electrical and telecoms installations.

He said: “I am delighted to be the new rail director at SSE Enterprise Rail. Although, like every organisation, we are currently facing challenging circumstances with the coronavirus pandemic, this marks an exciting time for SSE Enterprise Rail.

“In the last few years an incredible amount of work has gone into our growth in the rail division, a lot which may have gone under the radar. Now is the time to come out of the shadows and really shout out louder about the work we are doing and the services we can offer in powering Britain’s railways.

“Never has the role of the railways been so important, so we are pleased to be at the heart of that and to play our part. It is an absolute privilege to be leading such an excellent team here and to hopefully play my part in helping the business go from strength to strength.”

SSE Enterprise Rail has a very strong track record for the delivery of rail infrastructure projects across the UK, with over 100 active projects a week.

The company has over 15 years’ experience working on and delivering projects to meet the growing demand of Britain’s infrastructure. However it is only in the last five years, when the rail division was set up, that the company has seen huge growth.

It specialises in the delivery of electrical and mechanical, electrification and plant, small civils and building services across the UK, and among its clients include Network Rail, London Underground, South Western Railway and FirstGroup.

Raj Sinha said: “This marks an incredibly exciting time for SSE Enterprise Rail as we look to further strengthen our grip as the key provider of holistic electrification, power and mechanical and electrical services throughout the railway industry.

“The appointment of Tom, with his highly distinguished track record in the industry, is a huge boost for SSE Enterprise Rail. He brings excellent experience of working closely with high-profile clients and will lead the way in the development of existing and new opportunities in the rail division.

“In his three years at SSE Enterprise Rail he has proven himself as an ambitious and motivated individual and having him as MD can only be a good thing in our goal of becoming a leading provider of services to the UK rail industry.”
