Sustainability and social value: The platform to work winning and overall performance

Sustainability Sciences has developed a Step-by-Step programme in response to the resource gap and significant volumes of complex industry policy and standards on sustainability and social value.

It has been developed specifically for SMEs working in central government supply chains with the programme able to support work winning and sustainable growth through:

  • Individual SMEs joining the programme to gain expert advice and Step-By-Step planning, support and most importantly transparent reporting with the relevant goals and metrics aligned to key core service and impact.
  • Larger tier 1 suppliers supporting and encouraging SMEs in their supply chain to join the programme to enable and focus support for their own strategy.

Adriaan Bekker, director of Sustainability Sciences, which is behind the programme, said: “The central government’s social value model and procurement policy have created a sense of urgency to prioritise sustainability and social value issues in service disciplines and project delivery as it measurably impacts working winning ability.

“This has resulted in a need to plan, gather evidence, and measure performance continuously and in the long term.”

Some specific examples of this policy’s impact are:

• The Procurement Policy Note 06/20 mandates a minimum overall weighting of 10 per cent for central government procurement.

• The Procurement Policy Note 06/21 requires compliant Carbon Reduction Plans that have been made publicly available.

Adriaan said: “Sustainable procurement policies from industry and government is rippling through supply chains, as they directly impact tier 1 suppliers who subsequently need supply chain support and collaboration for success.

“However, SMEs and tier 2 and 3 suppliers face greater challenges due to resource constraints and the need for long-term planning and expert support for successful procurement events.”
