SWGR appoints new manager as it gears up for electrification opportunities nationwide

SWGR has announced it has appointed a new Resource Manager for its Electrification South team as it continues to strengthen its position across the UK.

Steven Butters has had decades of experience working for some of the rail industry’s most respected names, including Network Rail, where he spearheaded training and implementation of safety critical competencies on the railway. Throughout his career, he has also gained experience – from planning to delivery – of complex overhead line operations, getting the very best from engineers working to critical timescales.

His new role will oversee SWGR’s teams as they continue to deliver numerous electrification projects in key Network Rail areas across England. After the recent release of the Decarbonisation plan by the government – in which it aims to decarbonise the railway by 2050 – SWGR is primed to play a key role in supporting to deliver against these targets.

SWGR has played an important part in rail electrification, supplying isolation teams to projects throughout the UK and utilising infrastructure experience that stretches back 30 years.

It is currently a Tier 1 supplier for Network Rail in seven of the infrastructure’s nine regions – carrying out a wide range of overhead line (OHL) installations, improvements, emergency response operations and maintenance work.

It was Steven’s leadership, his sense of initiative, his constant drive for self-improvement, and his ‘team-first’ outlook which meant SWGR felt he would be a perfect fit for the business.

Raj Sinha, Group Managing Director for SWGR, said: “We are pleased to have Steven join us at a very exciting time. We have a strong, capable and people-driven business that serves every Network Rail region, helping to deliver their most crucial projects through unwavering dedication to proficiency, time and safety.

“Steven is the perfect fit for a team that is working on some of the most vital projects SWGR has had the privilege to be a part of. It was important for us to appoint a Resource Manager that builds on our strong foundations focused on safety, work ethic and, essentially, always doing the right thing.

“He is known in the industry for being able to run and maintain an agile-thinking and client-conscious workforce. Leadership which inspires and creates true motivation is very important when the work we do requires such sensitivity and has such an integral impact on the rail network.”

Steven said: “It’s true to say I am humbled and proud to have worked with some of the best people in rail and done everything I could to contribute to their cultures of excellence.

“It was only natural, then, when I saw the great things SWGR do through its people and expertise, and the strong safety culture that is embedded in all its frontline colleagues, that I hoped I could become a part of that.

“When it comes to rail, SWGR has gone from strength to strength over the years – and it is safe to say we know there are exciting times ahead for the whole of the industry – this company has a crucial part to play in that.”
