UK Rail Technology named a TIME best invention of 2023

Tended, a leading provider of geofencing technology for rail and track worker safety, has been named as one of TIME’s Best Inventions for 2023 alongside the world’s most powerful supercomputer, NASA’s MOXIE that can extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere and Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

This recognition highlights Tended’s commitment to revolutionising rail operations and ensuring the safety of workers in the industry. TIME, known for its authoritative coverage of innovation and technology, has recognised Tended for its groundbreaking approach in combining geospatial technology and wearables to enhance worksite safety.

Tended’s flagship geofencing solution enables organisations to create virtual safe zones or fences on their worksites. These zones trigger real-time alerts if the boundary is crossed, preventing individuals from straying into hazardous areas, which could be fatal in high-risk industries.

It also offers improved worksite visibility by providing a live view of vehicles and assets. Real-time alerts are triggered in response to potential safety incidents, such as vehicles approaching predefined zones or equipment left on the tracks. These early warnings serve to prevent point breaches, which result in consequent damage, significant cost overruns, and network disruptions, and also ensure effective site clearance upon project completion, reducing the risk of collisions when lines are reopened.

“We are honoured to have been included in TIME’s prestigious list of Best Inventions for 2023,” said Leo Scott Smith, Tended’s CEO and Founder. “This acknowledgement highlights the importance of our technology in the rail sector and the workers we aim to protect.

“It’s an accolade that belongs to the whole team at Tended who are dedicated to developing game-changing technology that will transform safety and efficiency within the rail industry.”

This comes just two weeks after Tended announced their £1.4m project with the European Space Agency. Collaborating with the European and UK space agencies, as well as Siemens Mobility, Story Contracting, RSS Infrastructure and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Tended will leverage space-based assets and advanced technologies to advance their current capabilities and deliver the next generation of geospatial technology.

In addition to being named as one of the TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023, Tended has been featured on the Digital Leaders 100 list for Geospatial Initiative of the Year 2023 and has been recognised at the prestigious National Rail Awards for Innovation of the Year 2023.

To support its rapid growth and expanding customer base, Tended is actively recruiting and hiring for multiple positions. The company encourages individuals who share their vision for safer workplaces and have a passion for innovation to join their dynamic team. View open positions here.
