Ukrainian Railways is “nationalising” 15,000 Russian carriages

Ukrainian Railways is taking control of about 15,000 Russian carriages that are still in the war-torn country.

It says that these carriages are owned by 250 Russian companies.

The joint-stock company, which runs services in Ukraine, insisted that it “acts strongly within the law” in seizing the vehicles.

The next step will be a legal process, as well as ascertaining which of the carriage owners “has a stake in Russia”.

Oleksandr Kamyshin, chairman of Ukrainian Railways’ management board said: “The procedure will take time. Determining which of the carriage owners has a stake in Russia is also a slow task. But we have time and inspiration. Russia’s carriages will work for Ukraine’s economy. They will be useful, because Ukrainian railways are developing new logistics routes to Europe that will help resume freight operations.”

Ukrainian Railways adds there are only 482 Ukrainian carriages in Russia.
