WM5G to demonstrate transport expertise with award-winning team at Birmingham Tech Week 2021

West Midlands 5G (WM5G) have announced their plans to showcase their expertise and the benefits 5G innovation can bring to the transport sector at Birmingham Tech Week 2021.

The event is a festival of digital, technology and innovation, designed to support SMEs in embracing new developments going forward. Taking place from Monday 11th to Friday 15th October, WM5G will be showcasing their innovations within transport by demonstrating previous trials and discussing exclusive upcoming projects.

Birmingham Tech Week attendees will have the opportunity to find out more about WM5G’s work to provide 5G-enabled solutions within the transport sector through a series of demonstrations and explore sessions.

Recently, WM5G’s 5G-enabled road and rail transport projects were recognised at the Connected Britain Awards. The organisation won the Smart City Initiative, which recognised their development and roll-out of a range of 5G-enabled projects to discover innovative transports solutions across the Midlands region.

On Wednesday 13th October, WM5G’s transport experts Chris Holmes, David Connor and Martin Thirlway will be on hand to provide transport demonstrations to SMEs at the Tech & Digital Showcase Day, alongside WM5G project partners.

On Thursday 14th October, attendees will be able to learn from the experience gained through WM5G’s advanced transport trials and gain advice tailored to their digital capability, at the 5G Day at 9 Brindley Place.

Guests will have the opportunity to engage in 1:1 discussion with transport organisations where they can talk to WM5G and partners about what has been achieved in the sector to date. In the afternoon, Chris Holmes will be leading a Transport Educate Networking Session, allowing transport organisations to come together and share knowledge and experience.

5G has already proven to be beneficial across the transport sector, tackling crucial challenges such as easing urban traffic congestion and making public transport more attractive to residents and visitors. WM5G are using their expertise to reinvent the transport sector in response to electrification, autonomy, and other trends.

With transport at the heart of the West Midlands, WM5G have put transport connectivity at the top of their delivery strategy. Working with partners including mobile network operators, broadcasters, public transport operators, the organisation has been working on ways to implement 5G across the sector.

Earlier this year, WM5G also pioneered the UK’s first 5G connected tram in partnership with West Midlands Metro, Transport for West Midlands, GoMedia and Icomera. This trial enabled high-definition CCTV footage captured on the tram to be securely and remotely transferred to the Regional Traffic Control Centre while in operation.

Chris Holmes, Transport Programme Director at WM5G, said: “As we move into an era filled with opportunities presented by digital technologies, we want to make a difference and develop longer-term solutions that have an impact within the transport industry. 5G allows us to ensure the West Midlands is accessible to residents, visitors, and businesses as they establish themselves within the region.

“We look forward to meeting organisations at Birmingham Tech Week and sharing our knowledge gained through transport trials to support Birmingham in becoming a Smart City, equipped to tackle the challenges of the future through the integration of low carbon technology.”
