XYZ Rail and Civils: The new chapter for Stobart Rail and Civils

Whilst the branding might be new to most, XYZ Rail & Civils has long been renowned for its innovative and efficient civil engineering, delivering safely and efficiently.

Established in 1993 as W.A. Developments, and more recently Stobart Rail, last summer Bavaria Industries assumed ownership with a vision to bring the rail business back to profitability.

Steve Pinkney, Programme Delivery Director at XYZ Rail & Civils has written an article for railbusinessdaily on the journey so far and the vision going forward.

“In the summer of 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Bavaria Industries assumed ownership of the Rail & Civils Project Delivery arm of Stobart Group. Armed with a clear and simple business strategy focused firmly on continuing to develop the rail business and bring it back to profitability whilst retaining the former business’s ethos for innovation, safety and developing its people, XYZ Rail & Civils was born.

The business remains under the continued strong leadership of Managing Director Kirk Taylor and has maintained a ‘business as usual’ ethos during this transition with Bavaria providing ongoing support as we move into our next chapter.

We are bringing along our great team of people, innovation, quality, safety and leadership which has seen us become a leading deliverer over the years and one whose vision for the future is based around the customer and continually improving whilst offering value for money without compromising on safety.

Whilst the business’s root remain firmly in Cumbria from where we originated – where we’ve opened new offices in Penrith and upgraded our Carlisle base at Blackdyke – work banks and our business strategy has allowed us to strengthen our presence nationwide with new offices in Motherwell, York and Buckingham with the potential for further expansion across the South East and Western Regions as part of our strategy to show our clients that we are committed to investing in them and our people.

We currently operate across all of Network Rail’s route’s and regions where our business has a proven delivery track record in track, buildings and civils, lineside civils, structures, vegetation management, earthworks, drainage and fencing to name a few of our current core business portfolio.

Our business strategy remains focused in rail and civil engineering as a Principle Contractor in our own right (we hold Principle Contractor & Rail Plant Operator Licences) as well as partnering with Tier 1 customers on major projects nationwide.

We offer a fully holistic approach to project delivery from design and build to handing back to the client on time. Each client is treated as an individual and we always strive to go that extra mile to meet their needs and we ensure that we are there when needed with communication and a friendly open and honest approach being key to building good strong long-term relationships.

CDM & Engineering management are integral to everything we deliver and as such we have a number of discipline specific CEM’s, CRE’s and Chartered Engineers to assure we follow all required processes as well as complying with our clients’ requirements on every scheme we deliver.

RRV’s and plant innovation remain key to our future, building on the continued reputation that we have garnered over the years for reliability and performance of our fleet of rail and civils plant and the quality of our operators.

Whilst the past 12 months have been challenging for everyone not just XYZ, we’ve continued with our positive outlook which has seen our business continue to grow whilst maintaining that personal touch and reputation that we’ve built over the years. No matter where we are or what we do, we strive to cover all angles for both current and future clients to ensure they return to us time and again or want to do business with us in the future.

At XYZ we are committed to the UK’s long-term strategy and vision for the rail industry and we recognise that safety, efficiency, the environment and people are key to achieving this, as such we invest and trust in our teams no matter what role they play in the company to put this at the forefront of everything we do.”
