HS2 will not be a “rich man’s business-class railway”, according to the boss of the project.
An article in the i paper features comments from Mark Thurston, chief executive of HS2, who said the aim was to ensure the trains could be used by “all working people”.
Decisions are still to be made about fare levels and whether first-class compartments would be an option.
Mr Thurston told the National Rail Recovery Conference that it “needs to be an affordable railway” so it becomes “an integral part of the rail network”.
Work has started on Tyne and Wear Metro’s new £70 million train depot. Contractors have begun removing large sections of track and overhead line to make way for the new building in Newcastle.
The works currently underway will pave the way for demolition to start next month. It is expected to take four years for the new metro depot to be ready.
Grade II listed Hanwell station will be removed from the Heritage at Risk Register by Historic England following extensive renovation work by Transport for London (TfL).
The nineteenth-century station, which will be served by the Elizabeth line, has been upgraded to meet modern standards while retaining its historic character through careful restoration.
Finally, and Transport for Wales has revealed that the RNLI has won a poll to decide which charity will appear on the side of one of its trains later this year.
The RNLI received nearly half of the 3,625 votes cast on Twitter, to finish ahead of fellow charities the Wales Air Ambulance and Mind Cymru.
