8,000 tonnes of ‘rock armour’ has been installed to protect the future of flood-prone borders’ railway.

The multi-million-pound investment on the railway between Hereford and Abergavenny is to combat bad weather and minimise passenger disruption.

The £4 million work began in May 2021, with the first phase of the project completed in November.

Further work will commence in Spring 2022, with more rock armour to be laid to future-proof the line against climate change.

Leaders from across the North of England will today consider recommendations from Transport for the North (TfN) which could position the region as a ‘pathfinder for reform’ in shaping what will become the new model for Great British Railways.

Despite major challenges with the recommendations of the Integrated Rail Plan, England’s first Sub-national Transport Body has been working closely with Network Rail on collaborative proposals to radically change the way rail infrastructure and services are delivered in Britain.

A £5.5 million Swanley station upgrade has been unveiled as part of Southestern’s drive to win back customers.

The new station building is more spacious, open-planned and offers a warmer, more inviting destination to travel to and from.

The original station was built in 1939 and rebuilt in 1959, with the latest improvements the first for over 60 years.
