SWR staff and customers rally to help vulnerable people over Christmas

South Western Railway has said both its staff and customers had come together to gather thousands of gifts as part of the operator’s Christmas Appeal.

More than 2,000 shoeboxes and 650 individual presents were donated as part of an initiative that took place in stations, depots and offices across the SWR network. The gifts were then given to the homeless and other vulnerable people.

The amount of gifts raised is almost twice that gathered together in 2020.

Jim O’Brien, station contracts manager for SWR, coordinated the appeal. He said: “It’s wonderful to see so many people across the South Western Railway network coming together to help vulnerable people in their local communities have a better Christmas. People’s generosity of spirit at the end of what has been another difficult year is truly amazing to see, and I’d like to thank everyone who donated something to the appeal. Their efforts have helped us to collect nearly double the number of boxes that we did last year.”
