At least three people have been killed and dozens more are reported injured after a passenger train derailed after hitting a truck in Missouri.

An article on the BBC website says about 243 passengers were on board the Los Angeles-Chicago train when it came off the tracks at a rail crossing near the town of Mendon.

Seven cars and two locomotives were derailed in the incident, which took place at 12:42 local time (17:52 GMT).

In a statement, Amtrak – the US national rail operator – said that the “Southwest Chief” train travelling eastward from Los Angeles struck “a truck that was obstructing a public crossing” near Mendon, a town of approximately 160 people located 84 miles (135km) from Kansas City.

Twelve crew members were also on board.

Hitachi Rail is installing its cutting-edge live monitoring solution across Great Western Railway’s high-speed fleet of 93 intercity trains, in what it says is a world-first for digital maintenance.

This will be the first time Hitachi’s ‘Perpetuum Onboard’ wireless technology will monitor the full-suite of wheelset and bogie parts on high-speed passenger trains.

The East Midlands Development Company (EM DevCo) has been tasked with developing a strategy for making the most of rail investment in the region.

An article on Insider Media Limited says the government has given the region £1 million to come up with detailed plans aimed at maximising the potential of high-speed rail, with trains coming to a new HS2 station at East Midlands Parkway and going on to Derby, Nottingham and Chesterfield.

The rail research organisations, MxV Rail and the UK’s Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to advance rail technology and innovation worldwide.

The agreement will enable the two organisations to collaborate and share technical expertise relating to design and engineering, commercial planning, procurement processes, safety requirements and operational best practice.
