Railway workers are to stage a one-day strike on 27th July as part of an ongoing dispute over pay, jobs and conditions, the RMT union says.
An article on the BBC website says it comes after thousands of train operator and Network Rail workers walked out during national strike action in June.
The strikes caused disruption for millions of commuters.
Earlier this week, Network Rail made workers a fresh pay offer it said was worth more than five per cent.
But the offer depended on workers accepting “modernising reforms”.
Ensuring the rail industry remained focused on the basics of health and safety management as it prepares for reform and substantial change, is one of the key messages in the Office of Rail and Road’s (ORR) annual report on health and safety on Britain’s Railways.
The report, which covers the period between 1st April 2021 and 31st March 2022, also highlights Britain’s standing of having one of the safest railways in Europe and that risk on the mainline railway is at an all-time low.
But concerns remain about recent accidents and near misses, and the need to strengthen safety management and oversight following the pandemic.
Transport for London (TfL) has said that its funding has been extended until 28 July.
It is the latest in a long string of short-term funding arrangements — the twelfth in about two years — as TfL pushes for something more longstanding.
Recently, Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, said that in order to get this there would need to be a “reset” of the relationship between parties.
London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced that Dr Linda Wain has been appointed to the role of Engineering Director.
Dr Wain, who has been Head of Engineering and Assurance at LNER for five years, will oversee all aspects of LNER’s fleet, future procurement and major engineering projects such as the adoption of digital signalling to ensure customers receive the world-class, punctual service that customers expect from LNER.
She said: “I’m pleased to be the first female Engineering Director at LNER and I hope to use my position to challenge perceptions and encourage more young women to consider engineering as a worthwhile and rewarding career.”
