Amaro, a specialist signalling, power and telecoms provider to the rail industry, is on a trajectory of impressive growth and success, following a year of significant growth in 2023 and an impressive start to 2024 and CP7.
With the new control period recently underway, Amaro has already reached some significant milestones for the next 12 months alone. These include the securing of 80 per cent of 2023’s turnover target, the extension of multiple frameworks for Network Rail, three brand new clients recently being onboarded and the confirmation of its award of 26 exciting new projects.
2023: A landmark year
2023 was a major year for the specialist contractor, which has provided signalling, power and telecoms services to some of the UK’s highest-profile infrastructure projects.
In 2023 alone, Amaro delivered over 50 projects, attending over 80 sites, and supporting 20 individual clients. Notably, the firm helped deliver five Network Rail frameworks not to mention one with Arcadis.
During a year of intense activity, the company worked over 8,800 man shifts, totalling 70,000 man hours, and hired 25 new employees along with four new apprentices. Additionally, Amaro’s fleet grew following the purchase of seven brand new vehicles (including the company’s first EVs), and an investment of over £500,000 in new equipment. The team also completed over 250 training courses and achieved 33 memberships of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and 21 memberships of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE).
Ambitious targets
Looking ahead to 2024, CP7 and beyond, Amaro’s Managing Director, Micky Ewart, has outlined some ambitious targets, including recruiting a minimum of 20 staff every year between 2024 and 2029, and eventually hitting a target turnover of £50m.
Discussing his ambitions Micky said: “Only five years ago Amaro was seen as a minor player in the industry. Since then, we’ve transformed as a business, making huge investments in people, plant, and equipment, fielding a team of almost 90 and opening two brand new depots in the process. What’s more, over the same period, our turnover has risen from £2.6m to more than £15m.”
He continued: “Success at our project at Beaulieu Park Station will allow that growth to accelerate, helping us to win and deliver yet more projects of this size. This is only the beginning of a new era for Amaro and over the next five years I expect to see our turnover jumping again.”
Setting the benchmark at Beaulieu Park Station
Following an intensive competitive tender process, Amaro was awarded a substantial package of signalling installation, testing, and commissioning works to support the construction of Beaulieu Park Station in Chelmsford, Essex.
The scheme is the company’s largest, highest value contract in its history, and involved working with principal contractor Murphy Group. The firm has been tasked with delivering the entire signalling package for the Beaulieu Park station project. The project includes installing state-of-the-art signalling equipment and is a testament to Amaro’s capability in handling complex projects.
