Business expands engineering capabilities

An independent supply, maintenance and logistics partner for the rail industry says it has greatly expanded its end-to-end rolling stock refurbishment services.

CWE Ltd says it has made a major investment in a new hydraulic and mechanical buffer cell.

The new cell has the capability to enable CWE’s teams to overhaul both hydraulic and mechanical buffers. The expansion is part of an overall strategy of growth for the business, which works with leading organisations in the rail sector including VTG, TfL and Network Rail – and plays a part in the business’s vision to provide a lean, efficient and future-ready service to UK rail.

Specialising in machining and fabrication, the company provides complete lifecycle management of rolling stock from technical design and reverse engineering of key parts including buffers, bogies and couplers, through to non-destructive testing and obsolescence management. It also recently unveiled a new brand identity and appointed a new senior management team as part of its ongoing growth strategy.

Nick Andrew, managing director of CWE said: “CWE already has considerable expertise in the maintenance, refurbishment and replacement of vital components for the rail sector, so the investment in this new buffer cell will build on our existing capabilities and state-of-the-art technologies to provide our customers with a best-in-class service. This has also given us the opportunity to return to the technical specification and custom-design a cell from scratch, and create a planned layout and efficient overhaul facility.”

The new cell adds to CWE’s capabilities, which also includes a buffer service exchange option for customers, which is designed to respond to urgent needs and keep downtime to a minimum.

Nick says: “We understand that, for our customers, keeping the fleet operational is of the utmost importance. We also know that the failure to properly implement buffer maintenance schedules is an industry-wide issue, and can lead to unnecessary downtime. Our new buffer cell means that our customers will benefit from faster, leaner and more efficient processes that both meet stringent quality and safety standards and keep their rolling stock on the tracks.”
