Cannabis grinder causes mass evacuation at Birmingham New Street

Birmingham New Street station ‘ground’ to a halt on Monday evening, as everyone was evacuated following the discovery of what was believed to be a hand grenade… but turned out to be a cannabis grinder.

Police were called to the station upon discovery of the item on Monday afternoon, and the station was immediately evacuated. All services were cancelled, and the station was closed at 3.30pm, causing travel chaos for thousands.

Large cordons were erected around the site, as police assessed the area, and reports were made that a suspected hand grenade had been found on platform one.

In a later update by the British Transport Police it was revealed that the item had been assessed and was deemed non-suspicious, with the station reopened again at around 5pm, with services returning to normal.
