Storm Claudio causes commuter chaos across the south

A yellow weather warning is in place across most of southern England today, as Storm Claudio rages across the region.

High winds and driving rain have made this morning’s commute a misery for many, but none more so that passengers travelling with Southern Rail between Brighton and Worthing, who found themselves facing a very unusual issue…

A trampoline had become welded to the conductor rail, after blowing onto the track in the stormy weather.

Engineers are on hand to inspect the bouncy blockage. It is believed that it has caused minor damage to the line, but they hope to have it removed quickly and lines reopen.

A representative from Southern Rail said: “Due to a trampoline on the line between Brighton and Worthing, services are being disrupted.

“This is affecting trains in both directions. It’s been reported that the trampoline is welded to the conductor rail, causing damage to the line towards Brighton.

“Track specialists and train engineers have been requested to attend. The trampoline has now been removed from the track, and our specialist engineers are inspecting the line for damage.”

Passengers were being offered advice on alternative routes, and tickets are being accepted at no additional cost on the Brighton and Hove bus between Brighton and Shoreham, and the Stagecoach 700 between Brighton and Littlehampton.
