New images have been released showing how a Tees Valley railway station will look as a major overhaul to improve facilities and access is set to start.
CGI for the redevelopment of Eaglescliffe Station shows how a new pedestrian footbridge will be created to boost accessibility to the west of the station and improve the link to Durham Lane Industrial Estate.
A new car park led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council will also be created – with improved cycle access to Yarm and traffic signals on the Cleasby Way junction.
Three lifts will be installed connecting the existing and new car park and island platform with the current footbridge to provide easier access for passengers.
After discussions with residents and interested groups, the existing footbridge and access ramps will be renewed and retained to maximise access during construction, and also provide a second emergency exit.
The station taxi office will be demolished and rebuilt with a new brick waiting shelter with ticket counter also created on the platform.
Contractor BAM will get to work on site in coming weeks for the long-awaited project.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Eaglescliffe is a vital station on our network – connecting people locally but also offering a popular service to London.
“For far too long, using it has been far too difficult – and the effort required for many people to get to the far side platform has been unacceptable.
“This investment will make traveling from the station quicker, simpler and more straight forward.
“Its revamp also makes it a big draw for businesses looking to base themselves at Durham Lane Industrial Estate.
“We’re putting huge amounts of money into our railway stations for good reason – and when these projects are complete, local people will have the rail network they deserve.”
Work at the station is being funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Network Rail and the Department for Transport.
The car park and wider cycle improvements linking to and from the station are being funded by the Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and the Levelling Up Fund allocation for Stockton South respectively, secured by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
The Council also snapped up a 26-acre site at nearby Durham Lane Industrial Estate in 2021 to help protect and develop the strategically important site.

“The new car park, which will be located on part of the Durham Lane site, complements the wider improvements to the station and I am delighted to see these improvements come to fruition.
“The planned improved transport links will be welcomed by rail travellers and residents across the Tees Valley and will really help attract more businesses to the area.”

The station project and wider transport improvements are set to be complete in Summer 2025.
