Train operator Northern and Network Rail have condemned “reckless behaviour by mindless individuals” who threw a log into the path of an oncoming train.

They are appealing for information following the incident, which took place near Bolton at 18:30 on Monday 14th March.

Fortunately nobody was hurt, but the result was a smashed window and a brief fire on the service, which had been travelling from Blackpool North to Hazel Grove with more than 100 passengers on-board.

Network Rail has announced it is carrying out millions of pounds worth of works in Wales to help protect the railway from extreme flooding and passenger disruption.

The announcement was made as Network Rail confirmed the Cambrian Line will reopen by the first week of April, after a trio of storms forced it to close in February.

Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin caused extensive damage across Wales. On the railway, a section of the Cambrian Line, near Welshpool, was hit by 33 track washouts over a half-mile stretch.

The Gatwick Express service will resume at the beginning of next month, two years after the service was suspended due to the pandemic.

An article on the ITV website says there will be a non-stop, seven-days-a-week service from Sunday 3rd April to support the recovery of Gatwick Airport and the South East economy. Numbers have now increased and are expected to surge still further with the removal of all travel restrictions on the 18th March.

The rail service was cancelled after passenger numbers at the airport tumbled.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) and Porterbook have announced they will be producing 50 new Greenbrier box wagons.

The new units, the latest to be produced in the business’ 15-year working relationship, are being built to meet a growth in rail freight demand.

In a statement, they said the transaction marks a renewed commitment from the companies to develop sustainable freight transport to meet the significant expected growth in the sector.
