Tube and train fares in London and surrounding areas will be reduced on Fridays in a £24 million trial from next week.

An article on The Standard website says Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced that passengers using contactless and Oyster cards for travel on Fridays will be charged off-peak fares from March 8 until the end of May.

This is aimed at encouraging more people back onto public transport and into offices on that day.

Peak pay-as-you-go fares apply on Tube and rail services in London on weekdays between 6.30am and 9.30am, and between 4pm and 7pm.

A proposed multimillion-pound station in Haxby has taken a step forward with the submission of a planning application.

An article on Insider Media Limited says Network Rail, in partnership with City of York Council and the Department for Transport, has submitted a planning application to build a new, two-platform railway station in the town.

The station, located on Towthorpe Road, will be part of the York to Scarborough line and be the town’s first rail connection in almost 100 years, after the previous station was closed in 1930.

A planned two-day strike affecting London Overground services next week has been called off.

An article on the BBC website says a dispute over pay has been ongoing between workers at Arriva Rail London, which has the London Overground contract, who are members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT).

Transport for London (TfL) said the action, which had been due to take place on Monday and Tuesday, was called off following “positive discussions”.

Construction activity, which will pave the way for the partial opening of the Birmingham Eastside Metro extension, is set to get underway in early spring.

Spades will hit the ground in Moor Street Queensway from April as works to extend the track laid in nearby Lower Bull Street, through Albert Street enters the next stage of delivery.

Work for this highly-anticipated extension has progressed significantly in recent months with main construction activity in Lower Bull Street and Digbeth High Street now completed.
