The next stage of the Elizabeth line has been confirmed today, with trains running directly from Reading and Heathrow to Abbey Wood and from Shenfield to Paddington set to begin this November.

The brand-new Bond Street Elizabeth line station, at the heart of London’s West End, is also set to open by November, giving another boost to London’s recovery from the pandemic.

From Sunday 6 November, the lines from Reading, Heathrow, and Shenfield will connect with the central tunnels of the Elizabeth line – opening up new direct journeys across the capital.

The construction of HS2’s longest tunnels stretching for 10 miles under the Chilterns has begun a new phase with the start of work on thirty-eight cross passages linking the northbound and southbound tunnels.

The Chiltern tunnels will carry high speed trains between London and the North at speeds of up to 200mph (320km/h). The trains will travel through two parallel tunnels linked by short passages for use in emergencies.

With the two giant tunnelling machines – named Florence and Cecilia – now almost four miles into their journeys, attention has turned to the first cross passages.

Network Rail is reminding passengers that the vast majority of the rail network will be open for business as usual this August Bank Holiday weekend, despite major projects going ahead.

Some upgrade works – worth a total of £90 million – are being delivered, which means some routes will be affected, so passengers are asked to check before they travel.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail’s chief executive, said: “Our teams will be delivering some upgrade works to improve future journeys for passengers, so we’re asking people to check before they travel and make sure their route isn’t affected.”

A Victorian railway station has been saved from demolition and will be moved “brick by brick” to a railway museum.

An article on the BBC website says Wansford Road station in Sutton, Cambridgeshire, will become part of the Nene Valley Railway.

The locomotive museum runs a 7.5 mile (12 km) railway between Peterborough and Yarwell, in Northamptonshire.
