Scotland’s railway will be closing for the second time in three nights tonight ahead of the arrival of Storm Jocelyn with no trains set to run in the north-east after 7pm.

An article on Aberdeen Live says Network Rail confirmed all lines will close later today (Tuesday, January 23) after what they called an “extraordinary number of incidents” during Storm Isha which hit the country on Sunday.

Several routes remain closed as teams continue to clear fallen trees and debris as winds of up to 100mph battered parts of Scotland, with ScotRail confirming services will end at 7pm this evening.

Proposals for the creation of a rail-related research, development, innovation and training centre in Chesterfield look set to be green lit.

An article on Insider Media Limited says Chesterfield Borough Council’s plans relate to the Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre, specifically the area between an existing modern red brick engine shed and a historic coal stage.

The council’s planning committee will review the application on 29 January. Approval has been recommended.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has joined HS2 to help brings thousands more jobs to areas in Warwickshire, Coventry and the West Midlands with three new dedicated Recruitment Hubs for the project in the West Midlands.

An article on Coventry Live says the hubs will help towards employment opportunities generated by the high-speed railway which is being built between the West Midlands and London.

It comes as new figures show that HS2’s construction is already helping thousands of unemployed people to start new careers with long-term prospects.

Passengers will have from 23 to 29 January to claim up to 50 per cent off selected Advance and Off-Peak rail tickets, through the Great British Rail Sale.

Over a million discounted tickets will be available to destinations across England and Wales, as well as on cross-border trips into Scotland, for journeys taking place between 30 January and 15 March.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “The return of the Great British Rail Sale is good news for passengers, following the success of the previous sale which saw passengers benefit from around £7 million in savings on their travel costs.”
