The Conwy Valley Line in north Wales will reopen on September 28th after Network Rail’s £2.2 million investment to better protect the railway from extreme weather and flooding.

The line has washed away because of flooding twice in the past two years, which has meant lengthy closures for passengers and local communities while the railway has been repaired.

The work has involved the installation of 16,000 tonnes of rock armour alongside almost 2km of railway.

HS2 contractors in London have been using a new low carbon concrete product which provides a reduction of 42% in CO2 in comparison to a standard concrete.

In addition, the remaining carbon emissions from using the concrete are offset to provide a CarbonNeutral® product.

HS2’s Environment Director Peter Miller says that using innovative techniques and products they can not only build HS2 more sustainably, but can lead by example.

Network Rail has provided a huge boost to the Great British September Clean – by pledging to get all 41,000 employees involved.

The article, featuring in the Daily Mail, says the firm says that litter, fly-tipping and graffiti can cause safety problems and delays for passengers.

Chief executive Andrew Haines says they have pledged extra cash for bigger clean ups back in March and have seen some great results, but there is more to do.

Meanwhile the Daily Star reports that Network Rail says coffee cup recycling bins are being installed at the busiest train stations.


Finally, and congratulations to all the winners at the Women in Rail Awards, which took place virtually yesterday.

Among the winners included Bombardier that won Best Apprenticeship Scheme Award, Simon Gallagher the Inspirational Man of the Year, and Emma Dymond winner of the Inspirational Women of the Year Award.
