One in four 12 to 17 year olds knows someone who has trespassed on a railway track, shocking research has revealed.

That is according to an article in the Mirror that says lockdown boredom, a trend for taking selfies in dangerous places and peer pressure from friends are most likely to see youngsters stray onto live lines.

In response to the findings, train operator London North Eastern Railway has built the set of an empty child’s bedroom which has been hastily left and never returned to.

It is meant to represent the consequences of a tragic loss of life while trespassing on a railway track.


Passengers face further disruption on Scotland’s railway as team managers vote for strike action in a dispute over covering for staff taking part in industrial action.

The article features in The Herald that says the action comes as it emerged gatelines at ScotRail stations have joined conductors, ticket examiners and cleaners in taking industrial action over a pay dispute.

Meanwhile the RMT has also confirmed that industrial action on Hull Trains will start again with a wave of strike action on Sunday, August 8, in a dispute over pensions.


Local contractors Alun Griffiths secure contract for the final stage of the Barmouth Viaduct upgrade project.

The £30 million restoration of the viaduct began in 2020, with work to replace more than 1,000 timber elements of the viaduct.

Network Rail and Alun Griffiths will continue replacing rotten timber elements of the bridge and 452 timber main beams, with work starting in September 2021.

The final stage of work will take place in 2022, when the corroded steel parts of the viaduct will be replaced.


A CrossCountry train is set to be named ‘Pride of Leicester’ after £2.5 million was invested in improving train services in the East Midlands.

The article on Leicestershire Live says the improvements have already created 14 new jobs and will lead to the refurbishment of six train carriages that will mean the two-carriage CrossCountry trains running in the East Midlands will now have three carriages instead.
