An Amtrak train carrying nearly 200 people derailed in southern California on Wednesday after colliding with a county water truck.

An article on the BBC website says the truck driver was taken to a trauma centre with a head injury and 14 other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officials said the accident could have been worse had the train cars fallen over once they came off the tracks.

Those injured are expected to recover.

Two tram stops on Metrolink’s Eccles line will close for ten weeks for major rail replacement work.

An article on the Manchester Evening News website says track renewal work will be carried out on Eccles New Road which will result in the closure of Eccles and Ladywell tram stops from Saturday July 15 to Thursday September 21.

Services will continue to operate as normal between Weaste and Manchester city centre, as well as the MediaCityUK and Trafford Park Metrolink lines.

The first of a £1 billion fleet of trains will not enter service until the end of 2023 – four years behind schedule, the BBC understands.

The article on the BBC website says the high-capacity Arterio trains were initially due to run from December 2019 on South Western Railway (SWR) routes to Reading and Windsor in Berkshire.

Of the 90 Class 701 trains ordered, only 54 have been delivered so far, with only 42 accepted as suitable.

The four-year delay has been blamed on the pandemic and software issues.
