The government could miss out on innovation and run up long-term costs if it cuts private sector involvement, a body representing rail transport operators has said.

The warning, issued by the Rail Delivery Group, was made before a Department for Transport market engagement day gets underway – the intention of which is for the government to tell operators more about the plans for how the private sector will be involved in future rail contracts.

Hitachi Rail has agreed a contract with ScottishPower for the supply of 100 per cent renewable electricity for their UK operations over the next three years, helping to accelerate the company’s efforts to decarbonise their sites by 2030.

The agreement provides an estimated 21GW of electricity per year for all of Hitachi Rail’s UK maintenance and manufacturing sites.

New polling has revealed that confidence in the rail industry has returned to pre-2019 levels, in a positive sign of growing optimism about the future.

A poll of more than 260 rail industry leaders, conducted by Savanta on behalf of the Railway Industry Association (RIA), shows optimism about the rail supply industry has returned to 2019 levels after a sharp dip in 2020, with 45 per cent predicting growth in the coming year.

ScotRail has unveiled plans to make Falkirk High Scotland’s first net zero carbon station.

Falkirk High station has been selected to become Scotland’s first net zero carbon station as part of ScotRail’s plans to help decarbonise Scotland’s Railway by 2035.

Among the plans for the station includes installing a large four-bay solar-pv carport, improving insultation to the station building and installing smart LED lighting in the car park and walkway.
