A Northern train driver has been injured and was taken to hospital after a brick was thrown at one of the rail operator’s trains.

The driver, who is now recovering at home, has urged people to “stop taking risks on the railway”.

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern said: “It’s hard to believe that anyone would put the safety of others at risk by such reckless behaviour.”

Northern is offering a £1,000 reward for anyone who provides information which leads to a conviction following the incident.

A new Crossrail station’s been completed ahead of the expected opening of the Elizabeth Line within the first half of this year, TfL has confirmed.

An article in the Evening Standard says Burnham station has been upgraded with a brand-new accessible ticket office building, a cycle parking area, and a lift to provide step-free access as it prepares to welcome Elizabeth Line services before the summer.

Situated between Slough and Reading, Burnham station will eventually connect Elizabeth Line passengers with central London as well as Shenfield in the east.

Engineers are starting work this week on the Mallaig line at Lochailort in the West Highlands.

The £1.8 million investment will help improve the resilience of the railway and follows on from work undertaken at this location in the summer of 2020 – when severe weather caused flash floods that washed away 80 metres of railway.

The four-month programme, from February to June 2022, involves installing a new concrete drainage tunnel.

Swindon and Crewe have announced their intentions to bid to become the new HQ for Great British Railways.

It follows the launch of a national competition by the government for the new home for the body that brings together track and train delivery all under one roof.

Cheshire Live has an article in which it has launched the Destination Crewe campaign while the BBC website features an article saying Swindon plans to submit a bid to become the home of GBR.
