Rail construction innovators ChangeMaker 3D given royal showcase in book commemorating King Charles III

ChangeMaker 3D Ltd, a sustainable tech company set on shaking up construction projects in the UK’s rail sector, has been showcased in a commemorative royal book highlighting some of the UK’s most forward-thinking organisations.

The 3D print company is featured in a double-page spread in King Charles III: The Leadership and Vision of a Modern Monarch, by royal author Robert Jobson.

ChangeMaker 3D’s dedicated spread tells the story of this local husband-and-wife team who are passionate about creating a sustainable built environment.

It explains how they’ve bought an unorthodox approach to working with companies such as United Utilities and Skanska Costain STRABAG JV (the London tunnels contractor for HS2) to demonstrate the benefits of 3D printed infrastructure, or ‘Printfrastructure’.

Tests have shown the technology delivers major benefits in terms of being safer, more environmentally friendly and enabling greater productivity in construction.

During its work with Skanska Costain STRABAG JV, ChangeMaker 3D created the UK’s first onsite Printfrastructure Hub.

The firm proudly demonstrated the first onsite 3D print of a concrete asset in the rail industry that has since gone through a CAT 3 check and will be installed as part of the HS2 programme. Their collaboration is part of the National Railway Museum’s innovation platform.

In publishing the book, world-renowned publisher St James’s House took King Charles III’s 75th Birthday as the opportunity to launch the beautifully illustrated showcase. It reflects on the ideas King Charles III has championed throughout his life and delves into how he intends to shape the monarchy of tomorrow, highlighting the work of selected organisations.

ChangeMaker 3D was selected for the team’s strong approach to environmental and social sustainability.

The company injects new ideas into a famously conservative sector, supporting young and disadvantaged people with the green, digital skills they will need for future careers in construction.

Co-founders Natalie and Luke Wadley were among 400 attending guests and members of the press to be invited to the launch at Claridge’s in November.

Reflecting on ChangeMaker 3D’s inclusion, Natalie said: “It’s a true honour to be featured as one of 75 organisations representing the forward-thinking, sustainable values that the monarchy is advocating for the future of the UK. As innovators and disruptors, we are encouraging the construction sector to print like our planet depends on it.

“This gives important profile to an innovative technology that has the potential to deliver green growth for the rail industry. We are provingthat 3D printing brings benefits in terms of greener infrastructure, jobs and skills.”

ChangeMaker 3D was recently named one of the winning SMEs in the Clean Futures Accelerator programme, led by Connected Places Catapult alongside programme partners the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation, Coventry University and CU Services Limited.

Through the programme, the firm is currently working with Transport for Wales to develop a 3D-printed toilet pod, which can integrate rainwater harvesting and solar power.
