The safety of operational teams and the public is always a top priority for rail organisations, but when there’s a safety breach or a workplace accident, the ramifications can be severe. Of course, the real tragedy may be injury or, worst-case, loss of life. Those involved can face legal consequences, and the implications can impact both employees and businesses for a long time. Many people are unaware of how combative the legal system can be, leading to lengthy stress and uncertainty for employees, leaders, and businesses. Even in an inquisitorial forum, the questioning can take its toll.
So, to support this, the OPC and Skilful Conversation have joined forces to launch a new safety performance improvement workshop: Accelerate Your Safety Leadership. The brand-new, immersive workshop has been specifically designed to help evaluate, test, and, importantly, improve organisations’ safety practices and behaviours, emphasizing the pivotal role of a robust safety culture and effective safety leadership.
Accelerate Your Safety Leadership is designed for directors, managers, and front-line employees with responsibility for safety-critical activities. It aims to help view operational safety practices and behaviours through a legal lens to galvanize change and bring about actionable safety performance improvements.
Delegates have the opportunity to:
· Critically evaluate their current safety practices from a legal perspective.
· Explore safety culture, leadership and safety behaviours.
· Gain hands-on experience of what it may be like to give evidence in a court of law or at an inquiry, and;
· Reflect, re-focus and improve their own safety-critical responsibilities and leadership.
The workshop is jointly delivered by experienced OPC psychologists and Cath Brown, Barrister (non-practising) from Skilful Conversation. Together, they bring a wealth of experience in safety culture, safety leadership, legal representation in court, and training and development.

One of the distinguishing features of this workshop is its immersive, interactive learning approach using a courtroom role play and a real-world, business-specific case study.
