AtkinsRéalis Successfully Deliver Non-Disruptive Upgrade to Coltishall & Belaugh Level Crossings

AtkinsRéalis successfully completed the key upgrade of two user-worked level crossings at Coltishall and Belaugh to automatic half barriers (AHB) over the weekends of 16/17 and 23/24 September.

The upgrades delivered safety critical improvements on the rural line in Norfolk and were successfully built and commissioned using the ‘Rule of the Route’ principle with no disruptive access to the railways. This ensured that trains were kept running throughout the commissioning, a key Network Rail objective for the project.

As principal contractor, AtkinsRéalis designed and managed the delivery of the AHB crossing solution to deliver a cost-effective minimum viable product and enable its rapid deployment. Global Rail Construction were the infrastructure contractors on the project delivering the civil engineering and installation scope of works.

Karl Burman, AtkinsRéalis Project Director, said: “Our templated design level crossing meant we could provide a straight to GRIP 4 solution. Working in close collaboration with Network Rail and our partners, we’re delighted to have delivered this project quickly and safely into service without any impact to the railway.”
