Mayors across the North have written to the government asking for a rethink of rail plans.

The demand comes as Labour mayors Andy Burnham, Steve Rotheram, Jamie Driscoll, Tracy Brabin and Dan Jarvis are due to share a stage with Michael Gove, the ‘levelling up’ secretary at a conference in Liverpool today.

The article on The Business Desk website says the mayors are urging the government to reassess plans after the Manchester to Leeds link was downgraded.

A £3 million project to make Northallerton station more accessible is pushing ahead as Network Rail make important changes to the subway and work to install lifts.

The Access for All scheme, funded by the Department for Transport, will see Network Rail install lifts on both platforms, making it easier for passengers with limited mobility, pushchairs, luggage or bicycles to move between the station’s two platforms.

Key work to replace the ramp in the subway with stairs, install new handrails and lay new flooring will be carried out on 12/13 February.

Restoring a disused railway line between two Lancashire towns would “massively” improve prospects for young people, a campaigner has said.

An article on the BBC website says Eddie Fisher, president of Poulton & Wyre Railway Society, has been pushing for improved links between Fleetwood and Poulton for 20 years.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week reaffirmed plans to re-open the line after an initial pledge in autumn 2019.

Finally, two of the team from Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station are going to London on Saturday 19 February, to complete two tasks from crew member Brad Johnson’s ‘200 for 200’ challenges, celebrating 200 years of the RNLI. Brad is undertaking these challenges between 2022 and 2024.

Brad Johnson and Nick Walton will be not only visiting all four Thames Lifeboat Station’s in a weekend but they will also be travelling through 200 tube stations across the London Underground network.

In full all-weather lifeboat kit, including helmets and lifejackets, the two volunteers will start their journey from Tower RNLI Lifeboat Station, heading to the closest tube station for the first departure of the day. The challenge expected to take more than 16 hours will be one of endurance but also adventure.
