Northern pays tribute on Remembrance Day with a series of events across network

Northern is marking Remembrance Day, with a series of events being held across the network to pay tribute to those who gave their lives.

Remembrance events are to be held across the network on Friday 11 November – and on Remembrance Sunday itself (13 November) – with customers and colleagues from the rail industry joining Northern staff in paying tribute to those who gave their lives.

The train operator is also offering complimentary travel this weekend – and on Friday 11 November – across the entire network for service personnel.

Those wearing an armed forces uniform or carrying a military ID card, as well as cadets in uniform and veterans who display valid identification (such as the Ministry Of Defence issued Veteran’s Badge) will be entitled to free travel on all Northern services.

The hundreds of licensed poppy sellers, who have been volunteering in the lead up to this weekend, will also be able to take advantage of the offer.

Elsewhere on the network Northern staff and community groups will pay their own tributes to the armed forces:

  • Wreaths will be laid at Sowerby Bridge, Mexborough, Penistone, Preston, Todmorden and Barrow-in-Furness stations as well as Newton Heath depot.
  • Community groups have been busy decorating stations, including Westhoughton and Hindley in Greater Manchester, where bunting and poppies are on display as well as Wetheral and Nunthorpe in the north east.
  • At Aspatria station in Cumbria, a display of crocheted poppies now adorns the northbound platform, created by local volunteers.
  • Representatives from Northern will attend the Remembrance Service at the Railway Memorial, Station Rise in York to lay a wreath.
  • At Manchester Victoria, a memorial service will be held at the station at 10:45 at Soldier’s Gate on Sunday 13 November with railway Chaplin Mike Roberts. A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am.
